My favorite mid-year planning & goal setting activity

We are officially halfway through the year! It's the time of year where most people begin to panic that they only have six months left to achieve their goals.

I'm in the opposite camp, I take the mindset of “I still have six MORE months to achieve some goals!” I think there are two key shifts we have the opportunity to make mid-year:

1. Mindset Shift: The first is shifting from a scarcity mindset (I only have six months LEFT!) to an abundance mindset (I have six MORE months remaining!).

2. Values Shift: The second shift is asking yourself, do my initial goals still make sense? Or, has my life/work changed? Most importantly, am I still moving closer to the type of leader/partner/person I want to become? Making progress that ensures you are in alignment with the outcomes you value gives you flexibility and intentionality in moving forward for the rest of the year.

Every year, I sit down with my business bestie to do annual planning and we check in on this process a few times through out the year. Something that might surprise you is this - we spent about 70% of our time reflecting on our progress, wins and losses and only about 30% of our time claiming new goals and visions. This is because we must reflect back to move forward.

It's called the reflection effect. A study found that employees who spent 15 minutes reflecting on what they learned during the workday performed 23% better after 10 days than those who skipped out on reflection.

This process also helps support you in the two shifts mentioned above - focusing on abundance (how much more remains) and values (am I still moving in the direction I want to go?).

Want to plan the rest of your year along with me? See the questions below that I'm asking myself this week!

HOW YOU CAN USE THIS

Grab your work BFF or do this activity as a team-building exercise! Here are some simple questions you can use to have your own annual planning session.

Reflection Questions:

(Take an hour do do these or try journaling every morning for 15 minutes on each question)

  • What were my initial goals?

  • What did I do well? What top 3 things am I proud of?

  • What didn't go well? What did I learn?

  • What isn't working?

  • How did I limit myself? What was I believing that held me back?

  • What circumstances have changed that impact my career / life / work?

  • What strengths did I capitalize on?

Advancing Forward Questions:

  • Where do I want to be by December 31, 2024?

  • How do I want to feel? How do I want to lead? What do I want to learn?

  • Who do I need to be to achieve these things?

  • What opportunities exist that I may be overlooking and need to act upon?

  • What are my top 3-5 priorities?

  • What is a word or theme for the remainder of the year that will carry me forward intentionally?
